"Planting the Future"

The Vi Agroforestry Programme is under the Vi Tree Foundation an international non political, non religious and nonprofit organization registered in Sweden and in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda as a non-governmental organization.  It started in West Pokot, Kenya in 1983. The original aim was to halt desertification by planting trees and making the area green.

As more funds became available, the programme expanded in 1986, and a project was established in Kitale.  The programme concept developed further, from focusing merely on tree planting, to eventually promote more rural based agroforestry technologies.  Further programme expansions led to projects established in Masaka, Uganda in 1992, Musoma, Tanzania in 1994, Mwanza, Tanzania in 1999 and in the new millennium three projects were established (one in Kisumu, Kenya in 2002, in Kigali, Rwanda in 2004 and lastly, in Kagera, Tanzania in 2005.
