SCC in KENYA

SCC was registered in Kenya in September 1997. However, since the late 60’s SCC had been supporting Kenyan organisations through the framework of a Nordic project for cooperative development, Kenya Nordic Development Programme.

The driving force in the beginning was a strong sense of solidarity towards the emerging cooperative organisations and their members, in the new countries that were formed in the wake of the dismantling of the European colonies in Africa and Asia.

In 1979 SCC started the first movement-to-movement support to farmers organisations, in collaboration with the Swedish member organisation Lantbrukarnas Riks Förbund (LRF). Kenya National Farmers Union became the first partner organisation. The initial focus was on agriculture and rural banking but current focus had widened to include financial services and habitat. During the years, the number of partner organisations has increased.

One of the most recent additions is Cooperative Insurance Company of Kenya (CIC) and a venture into micro insurance together with the international UN labor rights organisation ILO. The goal is to offer an insurances for health, accidents and income to 220 000 Kenyan families that are too poor to get a regular insurance from an insurance company.
