High time to re-invest in agriculture!

Of the absolutely poorest people in the world, 75% live in rural areas in developing countries. Most of them make their living by farming. In spite of this, rich countries support to agriculture has decreased considerably.

Governments of developing countries have also invested less in agriculture, probably partially due to donors’ fading interest in this sector. Those who govern
poor countries listen to the opinions of those holding the purse strings.

In the course of SCC operations we meet thousands of smallholder farmers and their families on a daily basis and what we see has caused us to stand up and make a forceful statement – Sweden and other rich countries must return to investment in agriculture!

The SCC report "The betrayal of the poorest" tells the story of the agricultural policies of the last few decades in developing countries, and how the rich countries betrayed the farmers.
